I missed watching Girls the first time round and also this week came across ‘Not that Kind of Girl’ when sorting through boxes of books in our basement ahead of an upcoming house move. I’m seeing these both as signs that I need to watch Girls and read Lena’s book (which I didn’t finish at the time). But know I will need some escapism over the next few weeks and Girls sounds perfect for that! I’m exactly the same age as you Emma so especially appreciate anything you share that’s culturally nostalgic as love being taken back to those times! Whilst being grateful that I’m not twenty something anymore 🫢
I saw “Girls” only few yrs ago, I read about it here on Substack and I was curious, in Italy wasn’t famous but luckily I found it on “Now Tv” a platform more or less like Netflix I don’t know if it used also in UK.
Initially I didn’t understood the characters, like I never understood why no one gave a little bit of empathy to Jess? why no one suggested her to go to therapy?
Shoshanna seems to be the only one who more or less know she has to do everything for her own happiness, but.. the name “Shoshanna” it’s a real name? For people of Bologna is one of those names impossible to pronounce, we have problems with S and Z, she is a real good friend, it’s sad that the other don’t understand her value.
Even if I haven’t understood a lot of the tv series, I looked ALL the seasons, Marnie is for sure one of the most toxic personalities at the end ok maybe not 100% toxic but she is hungry for attention, at the end of the season I thought she was grew up instead she was the same when she moved to help Hannah when she said: “no one of ur friends is helping u, u have only me” me, me ME always me, and other friend in the same situation would say: “ok I know is hard we could organise a day with all our friends” or “we will call everyone and we will have a day in NY together”.
I would LOVE to have a friend like Elijah it’s the best character, it’s a dreamer but also he is very realistic, it seems one of those person who look people for who they are for real. But of course he made some mistakes like it’s normal at 20yrs.
Hannah isn’t my fav character, anyway I love her growth during the seasons, she decided what’s better for her and for her future baby. It’s also a really good picture of this age, when u want all immediately, u are a little bit selfish because u know what u want and u think to deserve it only because it’s u.
I’m in LOVE of “Too Much” I’m sad there are only 10 ep. I want more and more.
The complexity of each characters in “Girls” and “Too Much” it’s simply incredible, the nan is my fav so funny.
Lena Dunham is a genius! So cool u had the possibility to interviewed her and to know her.
I honestly think I was jealous of her...writing and making an HBO series, when I watched it on TV.
But now I love the show! The writing! The music! The gritty NYC parties! The series showed me how unhappy I was with in my tech career, a repressed storyteller drinking too much coffee. Now I'm a real live author!!!
The music for sure - Christine and the Queens is my instant memory alongside Robyn. So good! The wedding Ep also had an amazing track that I still listen to now. I used to google the music as I was watching each ep. I might re-watch too - thanks for the nostalgia. What a series.
Enjoyed this so much and it gave me so much nostalgia! Lena & GIRLS is one of the reasons why I ended up living in NYC in my 20s for five years. And then I moved to London without even realizing she lived there.
I live in Berlin currently, but still love seeing her thrive creatively and make new films & tv series inspired by her (now not-so-new) life in London.
Thanks Emma. Really enjoyed reading this. Has made me want to watch Girls all over again. Am such a big fan of Lena Dunham. Great that you’ve met her on several occasions. Looking forward to watching Too Much 😀
Emma! I was 27 living in Brixton & we had Sky (the luxury) when I first encountered “Girls” - I hadn’t encountered it before & thought it was very brave. I love that Lena Dunham is now utilising her romantic notions of London for her new show.
Very with you on point 10. One of my favourite scenes is when Desi says to Ray something along the lines of 'hey man, I need to know if you and me are sympatico?' and Ray deadpans 'I'm afraid you're not going to get that assurance from me today'. Be more Ray!
This was so much fun to read 🙌🏻

Love Lena and her writing so much. Not just on Girls but she has an actual book 📚 I admire her talent and openness. Can't wait to watch her new show.
Girls is my comfort watch, I think I need another. Perhaps after I binge Too Much later today!
I’m so excited to watch it later!!
Aaaww this made me want to rewatch GIRLS!! Thank you🩷
