Hi Emma, I might be a bit late for this one, but I’m looking for a recommendation for a UK seaside hotel for a short solo break in September.

Now that I’m 100% self employed, this will be the first September in 20 years that I haven’t gone ‘back to school’ for the dreaded INSET day and I want to celebrate with a solo adventure. I’m looking for a nice hotel by the sea that I can get to by train from London. I know you do this and thought you might have some good recs ☺️

Thank you!

Hannah xx

Hannah! I'm banking the replies in this thread and planning to do posts around them but yours is a bit more time-sensitive. Did you read this piece on writing boltholes? There's some coastal ones on there I love in Eastbourne, Folkstone, Margate and Whistable. ENJOY https://thehyphen.substack.com/p/my-favourite-writing-boltholes

Thank you for your super speedy reply! I will take a look at that post. I quite fancy Eastbourne as I know Kent fairly well. Thank you 🙏🏻 and happy Sunday xx

How can I stop re-writing/editing/polishing a novel and move onto the next part?

totally interested in self-publishing vs traditional Writing a book on Women and Career. Love your work.

Ooh I have a more nosy question than my first – do you ever experience/struggle with imposter syndrome?

Hi Emma!! Now that your Substack is so successful and always named as one of the OG Substacks, do you have more of a rigid process in terms of what you write about like content pillars, a content calendar etc, or is it more fluid and just writing what comes to you when it comes? xx

Hi Emma! Sustainable, slower work with more depth and impact is a huge incentive for taking a path of self-employment, the chance to design one's own career. The traditional path seems to only favour speed. Many self-employed people are also moving at lightspeed, though. It seems to be a collective expectation, one we've imposed on ourselves as humans. In what ways are you ambitious about rest? How do you create those guardrails around working slower, particularly following burnout? I find my mind naturally wants to fill the spaces with more work, whether it's visionary stuff, dreaming up possibilities, business dev. Speaking from a similar, post-burnout space!

I'd be interested to hear about your experiences with tarot - how you got into it, how you use it, good sources of information. I've dipped my toe in recently but it's all very new to me.

Hi Emma! I have a (free) Substack with a small number of dedicated readers - been going for about 2 years, it’s about leadership in the arts sector. Numbers / open rates are consistent but haven’t grown for a while - do you have any tips for growing my reach on this platform?

In 'A Table For One' (trying not to give major plot spoilers here!) Aunt Carla is an important figure to the female protagonist. You make a major plot decision for her later on in the book. Maybe it's impossible to explain without plot spoilers, but I'm curious about your decision - why did you feel x needed to happen (regarding Carla) by the end of the story?

Hi Emma, how do you learn to love time to yourself?

What brings you joy at the moment, but... also, what tends to upset you?

Hi Emma, I love the insights into your writing room and I wonder if you would share some details on how you organise your time? Diary, digital calendar, etc. what works well for you when you are managing commitments that change from month to month?

It seems a bit silly in comparison to some of the amazing questions above but I love knowing more about how people manage their time and the tools they use.

Thank you x

How do you show up online and in your business when you’re in a funk? Or going through a kind of flatness or depression?

Howdy Emma! Well, now, I'm nerrrvvvy. I was like... oh, I have the perfect question... and now I'm second-guessing... Ok, so here it is... I want to write a memoir (I've never written a novel before, PS), but there are key details in it that involve important people in my life, and they would potentially hate my guts if I put these things in print. How does one navigate this? I cannot be the only person writing a memoir (or rather wanting to write a memoir) in this pickle.

Hi Emma. I love your writing and have read all your books now except your newest which is on my list. Thank you for the work you do. My question is this: I am a PhD student and although I am fairly proficient at writing academically, I would really like to be able to communicate my health promotion research and what I am learning to a wider audience. Do you have any suggestions about how to transition from academic writing to more general storytelling? Thanks so much. ✨

Hi Emma

What gives your life a sense of purpose, and how has that evolved over time? And has writing played a role in helping you discover or define it?

Thank you!
